MDLL 490/510 is a service-learning course, therefore our approach is significantly different than traditional study abroad courses in three ways. First, our primary focus is on the needs of the school communities with which we have established partnerships over the past four years. rather than on polishing our Spanish proficiency or on learning a specific, pre-defined list of teaching skills. Second, that focus on community needs requires us to be much  more flexbility than in study abroad. We may arrive at our partner school  and discover that what is needed are classes in health  hygiene rather than basic English, so we adapt. Third, our mission is to learn how to engage in action  research; we investigate community needs rather than simply assume we know what those are, and we design new projects or implement projects recommended by students from previous cohorts to meet those needs.
